We want to wish you a successful school year! You are making your way through this academic school year, which presents an opportunity for you to continue building a promising future toward high school graduation and beyond. We recognize your potential and invite you to participate in the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta G.E.M.S. Once accepted into the program, young women ages 14-18 in grades 9-12 in Harford and Cecil Counties will commit to “Growing & Empowering Myself Successfully.”
The G.E.M.S. meets one Saturday each month from February 2016 to June 2016, from 10:30am – 2pm, to engage in exciting dialogue and activities that build knowledge, character and community awareness. The actual dates of those meetings are: 2/27, 3/26, 4/23, 5/28 and a June 2016 completion ceremony (date & location TBA). G.E.M.S. sessions will be held at the following Harford County Public Library Branch locations:
- 2/27 – Edgewood Public Library, 629 Edgewood Rd
- 3/26 – Abingdon Public Library, 2510 Tollgate Rd
- 4/23 – Aberdeen Public Library, 21 Franklin St
- 5/28 – Abingdon Public Library, 2510 Tollgate Rd
A light breakfast and lunch are provided. Transportation is not provided. You must arrange transportation to and from the sessions.
The Delta G.E.M.S. program is designed for:
- Young women who have potential, but need guidance, support and skills to achieve success.
- Young women who are interested in developing leadership skills.
- Young women who are actively pursuing college/and or career options.
- Young women who need encouragement and support in pursuit of higher learning.
- Young women identified by schools, churches, youth groups and/or former Delta Academy participants.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a 103 year-old international public service organization founded by 22 African American women who were college students at Howard University. Honorary Members of the sorority include Camille Cosby, Angela Bassett, Susan Taylor, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Carole Moseley Braun, Leontyne Price and Aretha Franklin just to name a few. The sorority has more than 900 chapters and more than 200,000 members worldwide. Delta programs are centered on our Five-Point Thrust: Economic Development; Educational Development; International Awareness & Involvement; Physical & Mental Health; and Political Awareness & Involvement.
Applications for Delta G.E.M.S. must be postmarked by Friday, February 5, 2016. All applications must be filled out completely, including a letter of recommendation from your school counselor, teacher, pastor or community service leader. A parent or guardian signature is required. Failure to submit all parts of the application will exclude you from participation.
